5 Behaviors to Nurture Thankfulness

“One of the best things about thankfulness is that the more you choose it, the easier it gets. The more you profess thankfulness, the more you notice things to be grateful for. The thankfulness muscles respond to exercise!” (2019 World Vision Inc. World Vision, Inc.)

What struck me about that quote is that I must “choose it.” I choose thankfulness. I must look for chances to feel grateful. My actions point me to thankfulness.

Practice thankfulness. Everything we learn we do it over and over until we perform the task well. So it is with thankfulness. Time must be taken to be appreciative of your life. Look around at all the good things and people in your life.

We have all heard this before, look at the things you have and count your blessings for the people in your life. But we tend to be ungrateful and lean toward negative, envious thinking.

We are choosing ungratefulness. We are practicing envy.

Instead, how to practice thankfulness.

  1. Journal what you are thankful for: Be specific. Thank you, dear husband, for supporting my new business.

  2. Write a thank you letter to a friend or family member. Consider sending it or giving it to them in person. Again, be specific. Thanks for listening to me vent the other day.

  3. Practice saying “thank you” in a real and meaningful way. Be specific. For example, “Thank you for taking the time to read this article and leave a comment.

  4. Write thank you notes. Some might say this is a lost art. (See my blog, Write on! The Lost Art of Writing Letters.)

  5. Notice and express what others have done for you. Express your thankfulness with art, words, letter, songs, puns or poems!

Thankfulness is a choice. As your thankfulness grows you will feel that warm, fuzzy feeling of thankfulness of things and people. Your ability to “always look on the bright side of life” will increase. Others will see your renewed gratefulness and will emulate you.
